From time to time, when imbalances occur, then a great force descends to earth to bring about a balance. That is what the Bhagavad Gita says. The Avatara is forever the eternal wanderer. He might live here on Earth, but in the concept of time, he lives but a moment here and does what has to be done. Great teachers have come to Earth to give their teachings to suit the times. And those teachings are eternal.

You cannot be totally desireless, but even the desire that would be there would have some foundation, some form of logic. Those desires would be for your needs and not your wants—there is a significant difference.

Many people talk of annihilating the ego. What is the necessity of annihilating the ego? What is the necessity of destroying the ego? No, keep the ego by all means—but let the ego be permeated with the higher Self in us so that two things happen: we uplift the ego towards Divinity, and we bring down Divinity to the ego. It’s a two-way process, and that makes it simpler.

Many people believe that the chela, or the pupil, accepts the teacher. It is the other way around. The Guru accepts you or tells you there is another path for you. And he will tell you this with love, always.
